What is it about Washington?
Washington has Australia and the world intrigued. Now she is coming to the Adelaide Hills for an exclusive concert in the Bird in Hand barrel hall.
She’s a songwriter, artist, poet and performer. But there is something about Washington that’s different and exciting in a world full of formula pop and stereotypes. Sort of rock in roll, Elvis Costello, Cindy Lauper, Motown and Tom Waites – but not.
Megan Washington has previously been known as a collaborator (Paul Grabowsky) and bandmate (Ben Lee, Old Man River), but with band Washington, she delivers a unique take on indie-rock and minimalist elegance.
Megan Washington was unearthed by Triple J back in 2008 as a solo singer and song writer with a classic, trained voice. Her focus shifted from jazz in late 2008 and she launched her new 5-piece band under the simple name of 'Washington'.
In 2010, Washington was queen of the ARIA Music Awards, winning Best Female Artist and Breakthrough Artist, and received a further three nominations: Album of the Year, Best Adult Alternative Album for I Believe You Liar and Single of the Year ("How To Tame Lions").
After 3 years of touring and deeply soul searching songwriting sessions around the world, Washington stormed into 2012 with Insomnia, selling out the Sydney Opera House with a repertoire of her own work featuring songs, artwork and visuals, combined into a show rich with emotional, biographically driven material. The show will only ever be performed four times in Sydney, Paris, London and New York, but you’ll get to hear some of the hauntingly beautiful songs in May amongst the wine barrels at Bird in Hand.
